That Autumn Spirit

What is there not to love about autumn, especially in the month of October?
Autumn is a festive, yet somber time; a season of beauty and change, of magic and spirits in which we all, in some way, try to find meaning or a connection to our inner souls.
For me, personally, the month of October brings a sense of enchanting calmness; a time of apple picking, falling leaves, bared trees, and crunchy trail walks in the tranquil woods. On the frenzied side, there are football games and college tailgating to celebrate your college pride! And don’t forget about Halloween with tricks and treats, wicked spells, and ghostly stories that stir our imaginations, while a bright harvest moon fills the crisp night air, bringing us those cold and frosty mornings that keep us tucked in our cozy beds for just a little while longer.
I have many fond childhood memories of autumn that I still hold dear. Even today, the scents of dried fallen leaves, spicy wildflowers, and the wood burning nearby always make me feel like a kid again. On Halloween nights I used to roam and ramble in silly costumes, from house to house through several neighborhoods, for thousands of miles it seemed (in the mind of a kid!), trick-or-treating with friends until I filled my pillowcase with all kinds of candy without a care in the world.
For as long as I can remember, there is something about that chilly autumn air and the shortening of daylight that brings a melancholy feeling in remembering everyone who may have moved on, passed on, or just left our lives, but not our hearts. Then, I often find myself in quiet moments, just watching leaves slowly fall to the ground with a graceful touch, a solemn embrace that reminds us to appreciate nature’s lessons of life; what it teaches us, as we try to carry on every day, despite what lies ahead.
So we try to stop rushing around and maybe slow life down, to enjoy who we are, and embrace those changes with hope and promises of things to come. I am reminded of a quote I once read from an unknown source some time ago that encapsulates the spirit of autumn:
“Autumn is what you make of it. Make the most!”
